In industrial and manufacturing environments, standard floor coatings often fail when exposed to harsh chemicals. In this video, we go behind the scenes at a high-traffic battery charging station to show you why we specify Novolac Epoxy for extreme chemical resistance and durability.
Battery changing areas face a unique threat: high concentrations of sulfuric acid. Without the right protection, acid leaks can lead to rapid concrete erosion and structural compromise. Our team at Columbus Epoxy Flooring utilizes Novolac coatings because they are denser, higher-performing, and specifically engineered to withstand chemical submersion and heavy forklift traffic.
In this video, you’ll learn about:
◾ The Power of Novolac: Why this high-density coating is the gold standard for chemical containment. [00:14]
◾ Protecting Against Sulfuric Acid: How we prevent concrete erosion from battery leaks. [00:30]
◾ Precision Preparation: Our “keying out” process around perimeters to ensure a permanent anchor point for heavy machinery. [00:51]
◾ Joint Sealing: Why sealing expansion joints is critical to meeting EPA regulations and preventing sub-surface damage. [01:03]
◾ Beyond Battery Stations: Other applications for Novolac, including chemical containment pits and heavy manufacturing. [01:14]
MORE ON NOVOLAC EPOXY COATINGS ⬇⬇⬇
Epoxy Novolac is a specialized resin engineered for environments where chemical exposure is a certainty rather than a possibility.
The Chemistry of Resistance:
The primary technical difference lies in the molecular density and cross-link density. Novolac resins have more reactive groups per molecule than standard epoxies. When cured, this creates a much tighter, more “mesh-like” polymer structure.
Chemical Stability:
This dense cross-linking prevents aggressive solvents and acids (like 98% Sulfuric Acid) from penetrating the coating and reaching the concrete substrate.
Thermal Performance:
Novolac systems generally offer higher heat resistance, maintaining structural integrity at temperatures where standard epoxies might soften or lose adhesion.
Tensile & Compressive Strength:
Because the bond is tighter, these coatings exhibit exceptional resistance to mechanical stress from heavy machinery and steel-wheeled traffic.
Common Installation Environments
Because of its higher cost and specialized application requirements, Novolac is typically reserved for “High-Threat” zones:
◾ Secondary Containment: Curbed areas around chemical storage tanks designed to hold spills.
◾ Battery Charging Rooms: Areas subject to sulfuric acid “mist” or direct electrolyte leaks from forklifts.
◾ Pulp and Paper Mills: Environments with constant exposure to bleaching agents and harsh liquors.
◾ Waste Water Treatment: Exposure to hydrogen sulfide and various treatment chemicals.
◾ Food & Beverage Processing: Areas using “Clean-In-Place” (CIP) systems that utilize high-heat caustic washes and acidic sanitizers.
